To Hide or Not to Hide
« on: August 19, 2005, 08:20:17 PM »
So with the advent of Usergroups, I pose a question to this group of Rightous Wrath Members:

Do we want to hide the D&D related stuff in its own section, and only have those who join a Usergroup, under someones's Moderation, see this section?

And who wants to be said Group Moderator should this be the case?

Since the D&D group is a small set of people who know eachother, I would prefer it was hidden. I think it would allow for more open conversation and it would make it safe to post lets say someones real name, address or phone number when making arrangements.

I think that all the "Game Forums" be it for WoW or for CoH or for WTF, it shouldnt matter.  The Usergroups are fantastic to hid it from players/users who are not in RW guild for that particular game.

Perhaps the best way to handle it would be to have like a WoW General, and member of the WoW usergroup can view the "clan/guild/alliance" forums for the games.

Melbosa, great idea man.  I totally forgot about that functionality in phpbb, we used it a ton in The Mars Project for the ingame clans.  sort of a built in membership system.

I think this group has become unhidden now, as I see a "Guest" reading this post atm.

Archaic Games (non-electronic) was not meant to be hidden.

I see that the vote was to hide D&D section, the D&D sub forums have always been hidden.

So, is this forum (D&D), the one where this thread lives, hidden? I got to this thread by following what a guest was looking at on the online viewers page (so a guest was reading this thread).

My understanding was:

Righteous Wrath Forums (Public)
General (Public)
Game Chat (Public)
D&D (Group Access Only)
D&D 3.0 (Group Access Only)
D&D 3.5 (Group Access Only)

Looking at the dates on the thread I assume it was a) not hidden or b) reverted and not corrected as part of the SMF upgrade.

The root of all sub categories was unhidden on purpose, to expose those to the search engines.  Only sub forums of sub categories were hidden.  Only hidden ones was Edmonton Group (which was an exception), Heroescape Group under Heroescape, and D&D 3.5/3.0 under D&D.  So I would say we should change it back.  This was by design.

This thread was in Archaic Games, which is open on purpose.  I moved it here, cause at the time this tread was first created, the D&D forum didn't exist and we were using Archaic Games for D&D.

So do we change it back or not?  Hits on search engines for D&D stuff does rank high on our hit list from search engines.

Our D&D pages only go back to mid-winter 2005, so I'm not sure if search is that handy.

Yeah but it is non-the-less giving us hits from search engines, according to the stats I have from our log files.  What is the advantage to hiding the root D&D?  We don't plan anything there, nor do we discuss our adventures there.  It has been used for more to share ideas and concepts about RPGing in the D&D world. Or news about that...

Maybe we should rename the groups?

IE make DnD public again, but take the 3.0 and 3.5 groups and make them into "DnD Group" or something like that? Do we even need to 3.0 and 3.5 groups separated? I know we created them when we where changing to the 3.5 rules but I am not really sure why.

Maybe all forums that are private should have the word (Private) added on to the end, so everyone knows that the forum they are posting in is a group member only type forum?
