I Need Rides to Thursday Disc
« on: August 08, 2006, 10:23:31 AM »
A few people have asked why I haven't been at Thursday night disc for a while and the answer boils down to transport, see I can sometimes take the bus and then take a taxi home but I usually miss out on the big clump of people who get there early, so I know some of you go regularily and I would like to hitch a ride so that i can start going again.

Thanks.

In all honesty I find league a waste of a free hour or more.  With a group of 4 (Silver, Druid, Alyson & Myself) we can normally get a round in less then 2 hours, the last few times I've been to league the rounds go 3+ and while i do enjoy the company, i don't feel like I gain anything.  If anything i just want the tag :)

I think there may be some benefit to league though, well for my game anyways. This weekend illustrated to me more then ever that i need to get that play in.

Here’s why:

1st round of the tournament, i was matched with random people, no one in my group was in my division or even shooting from the same tee as me, so i essentially played the game in a vacuum with ppl to talk to. No pressure on the shots because it was first round on a new course. I played a great game, came in 3 under par, and even missed a ton of birdie opps, so my -3 could have easily been a -6 or even -7.

2nd round, matched with guys in my division and around my score, we only played the front nine, i held a par which was equal to the front nine on my first round. But i also didn't leave myself any birdie opps like i had before, i even double bogged a hole, which i didn’t do the first time.

3rd and final round, this was for the chips. I started the round 5 strokes ahead of my nearest competition, provided i played an even game, and my opponent didn’t improve in anyway, it should have been an easy win. However I just barely won by playoff. How did this happen? Simple; I lost all confidence in my game and cracked under pressure. Barely any bird opts or birds for that matter, lots of bogeys and even a double. I was missing 5 foot putts on more then one occasion. I totally psyche myself out playing against a 13 yr old boy. His game stayed rock solid consistent, where i added 9, yes NINE strokes to my game, it was totally mine to lose and i almost did.

Maybe what i need is more experience playing under pressure? Shayne and silver surfer have become excellent opponents this summer, and i constantly tie with silver surfer. But it's still relaxed, there’s nothing at steak. Maybe bag tag is what i need? Something’s got to change, or else i'll never advance above advanced.

Well, thanks for um... the info  :-\

Don't forget that River City is the 26th-27th this year. Thought I'd get some practice in with people but if no one is going regularly it will be difficult to schedule anything :-\

Bag tag has always seemed like a good idea, playing for money doesn't thrill me cause in all honesty i don't have much im willing to lose.  Then what have you got to lose if you lose?  Playing league doesn't make a person better as you simply play with other people, whatever.  Tournament play I do find a lot of fun and I like the challenge.  I am kicking myself for not going novice as I think it would have been hella fun to take on Jason, but then again if my back is to the wall will my game improve?  My first round was by far the best and thats because I knew the stakes, when I found out that I had third and didn't need to play I took massive chances to see if I could make a run at the top 2 (which failed bad).

It seems that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are pretty popular with our little crew.  Having to schedule everything would make playing disc with you rather difficult, considering todays 7:00pm outing was decided at like 10:00am this morning.

I also would like to see the intermediate division in all tournaments but to use the normal tees and not the chick tees.  Novice can play fro the chicks, and intermediate would be the novices from the normal tees.

If you could keep me in the loop that would be great! Every time I go I have to play alone usually, which sucks.

That's why sometimes its difficult to keep you in the loop. Because often when we go out we decide last min, sometimes 5:30pm for a 6:15pm start. We usually call instead of using the boards because Silver Surfer is sometimes at work and not by a computer. Often such short notice scheduling never works with you Mr. A because 95% of the time you already have plans. Since disc is largely dependant on weather, long term planning usually doesn't work so well since often the forecast will change completely without notice. Basically, we just look out the window, say "hey its nice out, we should play disc" and a plan is put in motion.

We could maybe start posting our outings on this board or place a phone call or two. But don't be surprised that they are very last min most of the time. Its just the way things have been working out for us

I would say many of us have the boards open all the time.. Hell you could subscribe to the Disc Golf Group subsection as an RSS and get notified of posts fairly quickly.

Or maybe we just need to convert you over to our side so we all work out of the same office ;)

If you guys want, you can have my work number it's a direct line. I'm usually here until 5 every day.

PM me if you want it.

Also, my meeting ended up being cancelled due to an emergency (flood or somesuch) in a suite in the A building, so I'll be meeting with my building tonight... hopefully. :D

I'd like to thank Druid, Surfer, Shayne, and Alyssa for having me out yesterday, and the Druid in particular for lending me a pair discs.  I hadn't played in a long time, and it was fun.  I still suck, but what else is new? :)
