How do you figure, because of the price?

I’ve always had a problem with the fees for Advanced. Its never really teired between Novice and Pro, it's just BAM! $20 more, then its only $5 up to pro.

Now this wouldn’t be such a big deal except i think Advanced gets shafted when it comes to prize hand outs. Even if you come in first, the prize don’t match the fee.

Novice winners usually get new plastic, T-Shirts, sometimes even a nice disc bag. (they often come out ahead of fees)

Pros play for cash, and i think even 5th place at least get their entry fee back.

The best I’ve seen advanced get for 1st is a shinny metal (probably $5 special at the trophy shack) and a pat on the back.

I really feel like were subsidizing the pro's. And as a bottom end Advanced player who has no hope of even placing for another year or two. It's almost like throwing away my money. Other tournaments in Alberta seem to have a more progressive fee scale for advanced. Why is Edmonton so different?

I agree, i also noticed that at Drumheller the winner of Advanced was at least top 4 in Pro and the scores between Advanced and Pro were not all that far apart.  I cant possibly play at the level of competition in Advanced, not yet.  Next year probably and the last month has been great for my game.  I will play Novice to save the few bucks and go for the win.   I know that Silver is going Novice as is Ratman.  Should be some good competition.

The fees collected by EDGA during the year mostly go directly into maintaining the course, which Rundel Park does not manage. EDGA owns the Rundel Park course. We pay their groundskeepers to continue upkeep on the Rundel Park Course. The fees also go into paying for the prizes that are offered and ensuring that we can afford City fees for the upcoming year.

There has been discussion about other fundraising activities (lack of volunteers is usually the culprit here) or more paid tournaments or events but there has been problem generating interest in the past for paid tournaments that do not count as PDGA events.

This is the one tournament from which the majority of EDGA funding comes from, so the prices are going to be higher than a temporary course that is funded by multiple sources (Lost Egg).

If you have questions about EDGA funding it would be best to contact Steve Mallett (if you want his e-mail address please PM me).

Hope this clears up some of confusion about where the money goes and why the pricing is what it is.

Im sure the fees are handled well behind the scenes and the vast majority of it goes to EDGA to help subsidize our free course. However im speaking about perception here, and the perception for Advanced aint good when compared to other divisions in the same tournament. Everyone wants to feel that they are getting an equal share out of this tournament.

Pros pay more because there's cash prizes, novice pay less because we want them into the sport and their prizes are often sponsored etc. So... Advanced are the cash cows because we need to somehow make money off this tournament right?

Not that im saying that in a bad way, because i probably get more free use out of that course then anyone, and should give something back. However, the perception to the casual player who isn’t as invested into the sport like i am is kind of WTF when looking at it from a division comparison only. It would be enough to scare me away from the tournament due the entrance fee.

Maybe education is the key. When you go to the gas pump at a service station, they all have little pie charts on them explaining where our dollar is going when you buy gas. Some is marketing, some is refining, a large chunk is gov. taxes and a small sliver is profit.

Maybe we need something like that to break down the tournament fees for each division. A chunk to the city, a chunk to tournament costs/prizes a sliver to course maintenance etc.

I think that's a great idea, and you should post it on EDGAs forum and you'll get a good hearing from the Prez and the tournie volunteers.
