I picked up my packages last night. As usual, the packaging was ridiculous, with every square inch in that box filled with something.

I was originally under the impression that some standard terrain came in the box, with the advertised count of 150+ pieces etc. I was wrong. There is 150+ pieces, but its all for wall building. The only thing that comes close to standard terrain is the extra stone (road) pieces which have special snaps on them for fitting to the tops of walls. The majority of the pieces are these "battlement" pieces which are the little pegs at that top of walls that creates the slotted cover that's so typical of a castle. Each slot is an individual piece that can be snapped to the side of any standard terrain piece in the game.  From looking at pictures i always though that the battlement slots were part of the top of the wall, not so, its all piece together. The wall, platform on top of the wall, then the battlement slots are all individual pieces, each reusable with other pieces not wall related. The battlement pieces provide almost full coverage for small to medium figures, and they have special rules where if a unit is adjacent to one, you’re targeting point of view can be from the slot opening instead of from the unit’s head. It’s to simulate leaning into view to take the shot but not leaving yourself vulnerable to return fire.

Really, i was very impressed with how these pieces integrate into the game, giving them utility that goes beyond just castle building. I would say as revolutionary as the forest expansion.

I built a castle last night just to see how big of a structure i could get with 6 sets. Its a good thing that i did get 6 because 1 set will build you a small tower with a gate and a tiny bit of wall. With 6 sets i was able to build a full fortress with towers and multiple levels etc. I took some pics of it, but did get around to uploading them last night.

The door is going to be pretty cool. From the sounds of the rules, if you actually want to change its state from open or closed, you actually have to have a character manning the door. So for example, if the door belongs to your team, and its closed and you’re trying to get in but no one is on the other side to open it.... well your SOL. The door can be barricaded, and it has hit points and defense dice. So storm the castle scenarios can be done quite easily.

I’m also impressed with the rules for ladders, I’ve never seen anything explained as good as ladders in the rule book. They really spent some time on this one thinking out all possibilities, and going to the extent of listing specific characters and how their specials may affect the rules. Hopping from one ladder to another etc. Moving up a ladder allows you to climb a rock face about twice as fast if you were just following a slope. This could/will change how we design maps significantly; giving us options we never had before. Really well done IMO.

Like i said, from what i see so far, this expansion is the most significant and will change our game to the magnitude that the forest expansion did. A+, these guys really know how to design a great game.

Here are some pics of the castle i built:

Left over pices after building the above castle:

Here is a shot of the door, you may notice that there is a working latch for baracading the door.

The door can be removed from its hinges when/if its destroyed:

That is sweet!  I used to love castles when I was a little kid, and I spent hours trying to build Lego castles and Playmobil fortresses.  Damn, I wish I coulda had those sets back then.  All it's missing is about two dozen dark-green army men defending against five dozen tan army men attacking and a tank made from a cardboard box :D

So...  How much does six castle sets cost?
Prayin' for a 20!

2 sets of Wave 5 has arrived

along with...

3 more sets of lava (doubles my current lava collection)

2 more sets of forest expansions (adds 10 more trees  8) )

4 sets of just water (84 more tiles with glyphs) im hoping to make some cool water falls and castle moat

1 master pack which includes 2 of the following: master set rule book, turn markers, wound markers and dice. I did it for the extra dice, first edition master set is all but extinct now. But she was giving this stuff away for almost free, so i wanted to get my hands on some original dice before i cant get them no more...

So only thing left to do is to plan our next game.... This Friday is out for me, but the Saturday might be a possibility, what’s everyone else’s availability?

Is the Saturday game a go, or is it still hypothetical?

Its a go if there’s interest. I'd like to do a castle siege scenario as a kick off to the new land expansion, so even number of players or max number of players is not significant.

I was thinking basically, build a castle, load it with tons of ranged and some light melee, then load outside of the castle with heavy melee, and some light ranged. Split the players with the majority on the attack and set a limit "survive for 10 rounds or something like that".

I present to you... Realin's Keep

Id like to use this for our castle Siege game. In addition to the front door, there will be a back path leading up the wall to get in, allthough you'll be forced to go through some ice and snow first. I also plan on adding an underground cave entrance... should be fun.

BTW: did you notice Double shoot hiding on one of the left towers in all the shots?

So, i take it the rules of getting into and traversing such a large castle are not as difficult as they might seem?  I look at that type of castle, see Realin, double shot and supposedly more ranged, it seems like death to get in, unless sides are heavily weighted towards the attackers (more targets).

It's hard to say, i wonder that too. basically when defending the castle your pinned down, so really your only able to defend a certain radius around the castle, aggressors would do wise to only enter into this radius if A) they are intending to rush in or B) can find cover along the way. Line of site will be an issue, and other then making a full frontal attack, really only one or two units will be in position to take a shot from the castle.

The castle is all road like tiles, so your constantly getting the movement bonus, the ladders allow you to climb elevation at twice the normal speed, and you will need it, there’s at least 40 elevation levels from ground to top.

The door will take a little effort to break down, but you may notice that it's located in a little cubby which will provide protection from any above attacks. Once you break in though, you will notice from the back shoot that you will enter a court yard which is surrounded with wall and battlements. You will most likely meet melee on the ground floor too.

I plan on adding a back route into the castle that the aggressor can approach without fear of getting attacked on the way, it will just cost a little in movement points.

I also think that we should give the castle defenders control of the "wing clip" glyph.

Having never attempted anything like this before, i could only guess how it will go. From what I read on the public Heroscape boards is that everyone loves the expansion and im sure I would have heard tons of bitching and wining by now if there’s any imbalance. Castles are just like they are in real life, gives the defender an advantage, and any aggressors would do wise to plan their attack strategically, because a full frontal attack (unless you have overwhelming forces) is just suicide. I think though that there should be more attackers then defenders in this scenario.

I take it from the lack of responces that no one is interested in a game on Saturday?

Lazy is out
Ustank is on vacation
Shayne? Shaynes brother? Surfer?

3 ppl would be enough, two attacking, one deffending. I could ask my brother inlaw if we need annother.
