My best work yet
« on: October 20, 2006, 02:56:29 AM »
I finished the castle siege map. I cant say how well it will play, but one things for sure, it looks F***in cool  8)

So cool in fact; after Shayne, Surfer and myself try it out on Sat, im going to try to convince my wife to let me keep it up for a week, where i'll schedule another game next Friday, hopefully we can get 5 guys (3 attacking, 2 defending)

but enough talk, here she is: *suddenly Heroscape seems a little more... 3D*

I tried to use objects to block line of site, so that the defenders can at least get close to the castle before getting wasted by ranged.

There are 3 paths into the castle, each with their own advantage and disadvantage. Normally in summer this river would provide the castle protection while ships can still port close to the keep, however in winter as the river ices over, this becomes a dangerous liability for the castle where it provides easy access to the back of the castle. Lucky The snow and ice will slow units down to a crawl allowing amply time to weaken the approaching enemies with ranged. This is the only entrance in which large units can get into the castle by.

The front entrance will allow fast access to the door since its paved with road the entire way. Once arriving at the door, an overhang provides 100% protection for two units to beat down the door. However the front of the castle is likely the most heavily fortified side, where approaching enemies are sure to meet tons of resistance. Once through the door, the units will most likely be greeted by a legion of well armed guards.

What’s this? a secret passage behind the waterfall?

Yep it sure is a secret passage, and look, it leads right to a back door. However, Realin is no fool and she placed a guard tower right at the entrance of the passage, loaded with heavy ranged no doubt.

These ladders will only allow small and medium units to gain access to the back door.

The underground volcanic activity provides the castle with a reliable source of heat for cooking, foraging weapons, and comfort. (On a side note, these castle walls are allowing me to do things that were very difficult if not impossible before, i.e. making multiple storied terrain, building a mountain is a lot easier if it don’t have to be solid)

Overhead backside shoot of the castle

The secret underground backdoor as seen from the front side within the castle. Barred solid no doubt.

Armed warriors await for anything that breaks through the front gate.

Archers take position in the front battlements

A trio of archers guard the secret pass

Yetis patrol the top of the mountain

And finally a sky shoot from the Kokanee Plane

This map used 75% of my pieces to build. I only which i had a little more water, then i could have made the waterfall two tiered coming off from the top of the mountain and going under the bridge, instead of just starting at the bride midway up the mountain.

That looks wicked man! Can't wait to hear how it plays.

So after playing two games with this map (2 on 1, where i defended, 3 on 2 where i was attacking) id have to say it was a relative success.

Very different game to play, we got to employ some rules and strategies regarding height that was never deployed before.

I think squads totally showed their worth this game. Big units were as always a commanding force, however the sheer extra moves you get with squads is invaluable, and played right can be deadly to big units.

The castle was as expected tough to assault, but not impossible as we seen in the second game where the attackers did win.

Those snipers up high were insanely deadly, but easily neutralized if encountered by the right units.

I will begin designing a new castle siege scenario based upon LOTR.

How long did breaking it down take?

helms deep might be fun, but it would have to have some sort of special draft rules.. Like those out side the gate can't draft unit cards over x points.

1.5 hours

Not too bad, i made some changes to my storage system which should make this proccess even quicker in the future, which was a main contributer to why breakdown took so long.

Basically, i used some of the bigger bins, and now im throwing pices into bins lose (still separated by size, 1pc, 2pc, 7pc, lava, snow etc). But not having to interlock them into the bin makes it much faster to put away. I also found the interlocking was a pain in the ass when you were building new maps, having to separate them befor using them.

Sure now the colors are mixed, but i think its a better tradeoff.
