IDK if there was never a separate thread created for after it actually got released.

but...

Rogue One according to various* infamous prolific YT nerds!

(can you guess which ones were obviously paid to recite pre-approved sound bites in their "reviews"?)

(and is there any doubt that "social" media is where the eyeballs are at now, and "mainstream" media is so close to dinosaur status that even Disneycorp can't ignore that fact...)

So are you just watching sarcastic reviews of the movie on youtube, or did you actually go see it?

I did go and see it, took a couple of the kids, and I thought it was well-done and fun to watch.

Mr. Analog

I saw it Saturday and it was fun to watch but there was virtually no character development. It's strange they could have made either a spy movie or done it like The Dirty Dozen or something, had a good long geeky discussion with friends after the movie. We're all looking forward to Episode VIII though I can tell you that much.

Of course it's less about Star Wars here and more about so-called nerd vlogs that gush over it rather obviously, RLM took a big time stab at what is either staggeringly blind nerd-service or YouTubers with something to sell

Which reminds me hey have you heard about LuteCrate? It's a new service that for only $800 a month sends you a crate full of stringed instruments! No other service offers anything close to this and at just dollars a day is a real steal for music geeks everywhere

While I have not yet seen Rogue One, I still find the RedLetterMedia guys to be a reliable source of funnies.

Maybe they exaggerated stuff in their review, maybe their points are valid (many SW fans were underwhelmed by the flat characters, for example) and tough for mindless fans to acknowledge, maybe something else idk.

I just think Mike and Jay and Rich are extremely good at what they strive to do -- entertain me (even when I am not familiar with the material being covered -- e.g. the recent DC Comics films). I hold no actual position on Rogue One being worthy of hate or of 11/10 ratings.  Not yet anyway.

PS this was extra funny and worth the share because of its meta-ness. They satirized a certain downside of fandom including the formuulaic paid reviewers that have always been around. Some of those reviewers hopefully laugh at themselves when they are targeted :)

I'll say this, it's a fun movie, as far as Star Wars films go its sort of in the middle

I heard that ~50% of the movie was re-shot... which makes me curious what the original cut was like (I'm guessing more character development, less battle) at times it felt like watching two movies intertwined with each other. Some complaints people had I could kinda see (CG characters) but didn't bother me as much. What does bother me is how I can barely remember names of important characters

Anyway worth seeing if anything for Sassy 70s style Vader

Darren Dirt

You mean the Vader that is (allegedly) the result of those studio exec pushed extra reshoots so he can kill a bunch of people with his light saber a ton? Which is what always made him a unique timeless standout iconic villain right...

I guess gotta remember it's a War Movie, gritty and realistic so no need to get attached to or learn about characters since they will just die anyway...

Jeebus Darren, you always do this - berate something without even bothering to watch it because you watched some reviewers berate it.

Mr. A, the problem I had with remembering people's names was because they didn't pronounce them very well yet they were esoteric names.  Like, I was sure it was "Hiro" for the blind guy (a classic name given the role and actor's race), in the credits I finally found out they were actually saying "Chirrut".  The character, however, will stand out to me for quite some time.  Just like my son really noticed K2SO's straightforward no-nonsense say-what-you're-thinking personality (and really liked it).

Saw Gerrera was one character that stood out to me as completely undeveloped.  I'm guessing there were scenes that set him up more, but were then cut.

There were lots of little background bits that I liked.  Lots of attention spent making people look the same as in the old movies, lots of tie-ins, but also some glimpses of characters from the Star Wars Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels cartoons, which are canon.  Although I must admit I wasn't geeky enough to realize when they talked to Captain Antilles in the background, that wasn't Wedge Antilles (Luke's buddy) but rather Raymus Antilles (from the planet Alderaan).

As for this being a "war movie" where you don't bother getting to know characters because they're just going to die...  How many rebels can you name that die in the trenches during the attack on Hoth?  Which pilots can you name that blow up while attacking the Death Star / Death Star 2?

Anyway, this movie is set shortly before the Battle of Yavin, which happens during Episode IV: A New Hope.  And I think they did a very good job blending old and new together to make this look like it would fit between Episode III and Episode IV.

Darren is reiterating one of the bits from the RLM videos, it's a running gag thing :)

K2 was the best IMO, apparently a lot of his dialog (and even the bonk on the head) was ad-libbed, it was really fluid an natural. I feel like there wasn't enough setup for me to get really attached to many characters (which takes the gas out of the ending). TBH I liked Vader at the ending, linking things to ANH

Also there were some scenes that made me a 10 year old kid again, so much fun!

:DING: points to nose and Mr. Analog

I don't have the energy to berate. That requires concentrated focus on a subject. This time of year is far too depressing for that!

I would rather just binge-chuckle some Half In The Bag until unable to keep my eyes open.

TBH when I see that movie I probably won't respond much more than a "meh, whatevs" at worst considering how I have never been a huge SW fan anyway. Hoping for a fun time though, I aint THAT cynical yet.

But overall speculating vicariously thru others is what I just do sometimes, like in this case -- but never intended it too deeply.

PS amazing to think that if Wash wasn't killed off in Serenity then all these terrific characters and voices by Alan Tudyk might have gone to someone else. Good for him having such high profile success here!

OK I watched all three of these links and I've gotta say... I'm not a fan :(.  I want my time back.  RLM guys are really not for me, and Collider is a bit much as well.  Glad you like them though, but I'll pass on future links I think.
