"Norm Macdonald Is A Comic Genius"

PS: and do NOT call him an anti-comic or meta-comic... I realize now I have been guilty of thinking that in the past, maybe only after watching his latest couple of stand up specials -- Netflix "...Hitler's Dog" is surprisingly gut-busting) -- and hearing some of his podcasts did I realize that there really is a science behind his art. Because the Canuck has quite a deep, rich intelligence, yet unlike Dennis Miller he doesn't throw it all over the place.

It's subtle.

Like the steps he takes you alongside him in his 12 minute journey to digging a very very VERY deep grave...

It was the 1 hour comedy special that was referred to in the video you linked.

Norm's latest standup special?

It's on Netflix. And well worth the watch.

"Hitler's Dog" is in the title for a reason.

No, it was the one discussed in the analysis video ("Me Doing Standup", 2011)

Here's a long but worth experiencing compilation of "Norm vs. Idiots"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqWGQBGYVpc

And by "idiots" the video composer wasn't just being ideological or whatever, they obviously meant "people who just don't get it" (and/or are perhaps jealous of Norm's age-earned wisdom and intelligence that is actually useful in applying to real life especially with the challenges of being in the spotlight for decades)

Seriously, 2 or 3 college level "intro to philosophy" courses could be efficiently replaced by just watching a few of these kind of interviews he's had over the years, where he openly admits how he doesn't buy in to the BS of certain myths and expectations of "adult life" (and yet also the BS of "never growing up")... that is, if the viewer is at a place in life where they are willing to take the time to really think about what is being said. Norm challenges you, if you open your mind a bit.

Also he's just FUN to listen to, knowing he's got that youthful perma-grin on his mug the whole time.

I found this after watching a "6 part series" that really demonstrates why his "act" never gets old -- because his name is the answer to the question "you're at the top of the industry, who else do you admire / respect / go to when you need a laugh?"

"What Other Comedians Think of Norm Macdonald"

...now excuse me while I go purchase a ventriloquist's dummy (or whatever they like to call themselves... because they're not just wood, they're friends!)

^ from 2015. Skim the vanilla article, but stay for the inclusion of Norm's tweetstorm re. the SNL 40th anniversary. As it was coming into being.

The Genius Of Long-Form Storytelling does this on Twitter a lot apparently. But this, idk, it's like an invaluable peek into a secret world, a revealing snapshot of that moment (and a sad look back on what a classic used to be, but no longer is, oh the lamentable connection to the decades before it). And in Norm's writing hands, it's actual poetry.

I don't remember even seeing all of the 40th anniversary SNL. But putting aside the end product, who here hasn't ever wonder what kind of stress, excitement, misery happened behind the scenes on this show? Well now you can know -- from the perspective of an underappreciated genius old lump of charcoal.

...because the light was on.

PS: dang, the official YT channel for the micro-budget "Norm MacDonald Live podcast, it's been sanitized or something: https://www.youtube.com/user/NormMacdonaldLive/playlists

PPS: un-dang, here's the reason, maybe? https://twitter.com/normmacdonald/status/972152255381045249 #LateNightNeedsNorm

Ahh yeah that could be it. I could use some Norm today

I just wrote a unit test for a single method that validates one file, it took 41 lines of code and one new Factory class to instantiate the 24 CTOR parameters
