Cobra Kai.  The evil dojo from Karate Kid.  Yes, there's a tv show now, set thirty years later.  And it apparently is getting really good ratings!

If I read the article correctly, it's being put out on the network "Youtube Red".  I didn't realize Youtube counted as a broadcasting network these days...

Yes, it's been incrementally morphing into another cable channel for a while now, mainly to compete with Netflix. There is some speculation that the reason why they put financial pressure on big YouTube creators over the last few years was to try and edge more of them to create content for YouTube Red. I don't know how successful these projects were though, my guess is "not very" considering most of the channels I saw who dabbled in it last year have discontinued the use of it (again I have no numbers but the "vibe" is that it was a colossal flop across the board.)

YouTube Red is $10 a month, you get no ads on videos and you get access to original content (you also get some music streaming options thru Google Play Music.) I probably watch just over an hours worth of YouTube content a day, I can suffer though the blipverts and I am happily ignorant of the exclusive content. I suspect people like me aren't the main demo they are after though.

I'm not sure where YouTube is going, they're very deeply entrenched in the video hosting area right now but if Twitch or PornHub ever move into that space they better watch their backs.

I watch a fair bit of YouTube every day and Reds pricing was kinda nuts.

I saw Vscauce go red,  I ever saw a monthly subscription option, the only thing I noticed was the over $2 per episode iTunes style pricing.

However the slowmo guys where pumped full of money and produced a series of higher quality episodes that I watched quite a few of because they where not behind a paywall.

I might be willing to pay a monthly fee if it was less than Netflix and also directed funds at the channels I watch.

Same here, I mean I already pay for Cable / Netflix / Prime. I imagine its worse with kids now that the likes of Disney have made a push into content streaming and sucked all their IP back into their direct distribution control. For little guys its easier, I try and support creators directly through Patreon and the like but even that gets a little thin some months.

Not to put too fine a point on it but the big corporate dummies finally figured out that people are willing to pay for content streaming via the net and then heck it up by fracturing the marketplace to avoid another iTunes type situation. Rather than everyone getting a slice of a very big pie they each bake their own tiny pies. The point is I'm hungry LOL
